Christmas Markets

Many villages in Provence host a Christmas Market. This in a great way to learn more about the traditional 13 desserts served on Christmas eve. At these markets you will find linens, tablecloths, utensils made from olive wood, olive oil, lavender, soaps, spices, santons and decorations.

and santons

Provence is famous for its santons, which literally means “little saint" in Provencal. These clay moulded hand painted figurines appear in the nativity scene, known as the crèche in France. It was during the French Revolution, when churches were closed, that the santons became very popular. People were able to create their own nativity scene at home using the figurines. Today the tradition remains with “santonier” (makers of santons) still present in many villages.
